“Walking”, it’s something every person even those hating to exercise are willing to give a try. Serotonin is a hormone that is a mood enhancer. So what could be a better mood perk up than the freshness of a walk outdoors or the company of a treadmill partner. Walking creates more than getting the blood circulation going, it also spikes up the serotonin levels. Being in the sunshine after being closeted indoors all day definitely is the feel good factor. The company of a friend to chitchat while you exercise definitely ups those serotonin levels along with your blood circulation.
Walking drives away the lethargy that one might be feeling after sitting throughout the day. It also gives you a sense of achievement as you fulfill your need to exercise and accomplish your goal. While walking as exercise maybe delegated to the elderly, for most people “let’s take a walk” is usually for conversations. And conversations lead to a free expression of emotions, a comfort between friends, a guidance from a senior, a connect between lovers, all of which release the hormone serotonin. So what might start as a leisurely walk usually ends up with a lot more than just that to take home. A walk before a meal might lead to a good intake of food, well digested as the metabolism is upped. While a stroll after will settle what you have eaten before you hit the bed.
Motor activity such as walking kick starts the production of serotonin in the brain and also triggers its synthesis. Brisk walking however will take you to another metabolic high, cutting the calories enhancing the usage of your daily carb intake. Brisk walking also tones up the muscles of your legs, the quads, the hamstrings and the calves. Ideal for those who are on a trip to losing weight and being fitter. As one regularizes walking as a daily routine, not only serotonin but also dopamine(another feel-good hormone) is released. Dopamine is the hormone that gives us the pleasurable feeling after receiving a reward, in this case the results which show on your body after integrating walking as a daily activity.
So don’t get lazy and press the snooze button on your morning alarm, put on your shoes and allow the sunshine to perk your serotonin along with the Vitamin D. If your aren’t a morning person, don’t use that as an excuse, catch up with your friend, spouse or therapist(like Sharukh from Dear Zindagi) and take that walk on the beach. Pour out your worries with your sweat and become a slimmer, fitter “you”.
